Description:
Time to learn to enjoy painting with acrylics in a contemporary impressionist way. Students are encouraged to bring their own photos and sketches that personally inspire them. They will be shown how to simplify complicated elements of the landscape and interpret them in vivid color and bold brushstrokes.

  • How to “see” color.
  • How to simplify a complicated subject.
  • How to use acrylic paint and mix colors.
  • Bright colors, big, vibrant, and fun. Suitable for beginners to more advanced artists.
 

About Mellissa Read-Devine:

Mellissa Read-Devine is an acclaimed artist known for her vibrant and expressive painting style. Originally from England, she moved to Australia as a child and now resides in rural Sydney, overlooking the Hawkesbury River. Her work, often described as “macropointillist,” celebrates contemporary impressionism with bold colors and dynamic brushstrokes. Mellissa has been continuously practicing painting and printmaking since the mid-1990s and has received numerous awards for her art. In 2021 Mellissa was made a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW where she has been a regular art tutor for over 8 years.

 Materials Needed:

  • Canvases: 1-2 stretched canvases depending on size. Minimum size 20”x20”, maximum whatever you can fit in your car. Your own choice of shape. (Pre-seal your canvas with at least one coat of gesso to save time.)
  • Acrylic Paint: (I use mainly Matisse Structure, but you can bring what you have)
    • White
    • Naples Yellow
    • Lemon Yellow or equivalent
    • 1 warm yellow
    • 1 warm red (Cadmium Red, Scarlet, or Vermillion)
    • 1 cool red (Alizarin, Magenta, Red Violet, or Rose Madder)
    • 1 warm blue (Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Teal/aqua, or Cobalt Blue)
    • 1 cooler darker blue (Ultramarine, Pthalo Blue, or Cobalt Blue)
    • 2 of your favorite complementary colors (purple/orange/bright green)
    • Dioxyzine purple is a great choice
 
  • Brushes: Synthetic preferred, not too soft, not too stiff – filbert, bright/flat, or round in assorted sizes (e.g., 12/10/8/6). Small brush for detail, old round brush approx size 10/12, larger brushes (e.g., cheap hake or small painters brushes).
 
  • Other Supplies:
    • Water spray
    • Palette knife (for mixing paint)
    • Palette – the flatter the better, white plastic plates are good. (I use an A4 document box with lid with a sheet of disposable palette)
    • Rags
    • Apron
    • Image references/photos
    • Paper & soft pencil/charcoal for sketches
 

Optional Supplies:

  • Plastic card (e.g., old library card)
  • Medium – drying retarder and whatever you might already have
  • Hairdryer
