Drawing for Beginners: Line, Tone and Form

This one‑day workshop is designed for complete beginners, as well as those who “can draw a bit” but want to build stronger foundations. Rather than copying photos or relying on shortcuts, the focus of the day is learning how to see. Working only in graphite, participants will explore the fundamentals of line, tone and form — the essential building blocks behind all drawing and painting.

Through clear, structured exercises, from tutor Hettie Rowley, you’ll learn how flat shapes become solid forms, how light wraps around objects, and why tone — not outlines — creates the illusion of three‑dimensionality. You’ll also develop more confident, deliberate line quality and begin to understand edges: where light, shadow and background meet. The day concludes with a simple still‑life drawing that brings all these skills together.

No prior drawing experience is required.

Hettie Rowley is a professional artist and experienced art educator based in the Hunter Valley. She works across drawing, soft pastel, watercolour and mixed media, and has taught adult students for many years through workshops, classes and art societies.

A Master Pastellist with the Pastel Society of Australia, Hettie regularly exhibits in regional and national exhibitions. Her teaching approach is clear, structured and encouraging, with a strong focus on observation, proportion, tone and edges. She is particularly known for helping beginners overcome fear and self‑doubt, breaking complex ideas into simple, practical steps.

Materials List

• Starter Kit Provided: Each participant receives a beginner’s drawing kit to use during the workshop and take home. This includes:

  • A4 spiral‑bound sketchbook

  • A range of graphite pencils

  • Faber‑Castell kneaded (putty) eraser

  • Metal sharpener

• Optional / Useful Extras:

  • Drawing board (if not using an easel)

  • Easel (tabletop or standing)

  • Workable matte fixative spray (use outdoors only)

  • Paper towel or soft cloth

  • Ruler (optional)

Here’s what to bring:

• Your own lunch (Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided)
• Apron or old shirt
• Hand towel
