Workshop Description:

Join acclaimed artist and master tutor Tricia Reust for a two-day creative deep dive into the expressive world of mixed media. This hands-on workshop will take you through dynamic approaches to collage, texture, printing, stencilling, glazing, and dry brushing.

Participants will work on two gessoed canvases—a smaller piece for minimal composition and a larger work to explore layered techniques. You’ll learn how to harmonise your work with a repeated motif such as birds, leaves, or geometric shapes. Whether you’re an experienced artist or curious beginner, this workshop is a chance to experiment boldly, refine your visual language, and work under the guidance of a nationally awarded artist.

Please bring your own lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, and contributions to the snack table are always appreciated.

What You’ll Learn:

• How to structure compositions using basic design principles

• Creating texture and collage foundations on canvas

• Incorporating drawings and layering mixed media

• Techniques in glazing, dry brushing, stencilling, printing, and surface texturing

• Developing a cohesive theme or motif in your artwork

What to Bring:
(Don’t worry—many items are optional. Bring what you have!)

• Two gessoed canvases: one small (approx. 10″x12″ or 11″x14″), one large (at least 24″x24″)

• Recycled canvases are welcome—just prep with fresh gesso

• Visual diary, pencils, waterfast black pen (e.g. Pigma Micron)

• Acrylic paints (avoid Jo Sonja); white gesso

• Brushes (including Taklon flat & liner), sponge roller (essential), sponge

• Palette (large and flat), palette knife, combs or texture tools

• Spray bottle, masking tape, paper towels, rags, cling wrap

• Two water containers (e.g. ice cream tubs)

• Mediums: Binder Medium, Clear or Middle Painting Medium, Impasto Gel or Texture Medium, Satin Spray Varnish

• Optional: Brayer, Free Flow white & black paint, drawings from home, squeeze bottles, pastel primer, matte spray

• Tissue paper (1 sheet of white essential), napkins, doilies, maps, music sheets

• Interesting paper/fabric scraps, bark, cardboard, metal bits, thin found objects

• Optional: plastic doilies, stamps, stencils, bubblewrap, leaves, patterned surfaces

• Optional drawing media: charcoal stick/pencil, white pastel stick/pencil

Tricia will provide a limited quantity of collage and texture materials to share.

About Tricia Reust:

Tricia Reust is a multi-award-winning visual artist and Master Pastellist with the Pastel Society of Australia. She has held over twenty solo exhibitions and was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003 for Services to Education and the Arts. Her accolades include the prestigious National Mortimore Prize (2012) and prizes at the 10th International Drawing Biennale. Tricia has been featured in multiple episodes of Colour in Your Life, and her work is even on the moon—thanks to the Lunar Codex 2024 time capsule project!

With two books, several instructional videos, and a reputation as an engaging and generous tutor, Tricia brings deep expertise and inspiring energy to every class she leads. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s finest.
