Watercolour Workshop with Helen McLeod

Join artist Helen McLeod for a relaxed and enjoyable day exploring the beauty and versatility of watercolour. This workshop is suitable for beginner and intermediate students, though all are welcome. Helen will guide you through the fundamentals of watercolour painting, helping you build confidence while discovering the unique qualities of this expressive medium.

Helen is an accomplished artist with over 35 years of experience. She paints birds, flowers and still life, and works across watercolour, acrylic and oils. Her skills have been shaped through many years of workshops and learning from talented teachers. Since 2019, Helen has been part of Lake Macquarie Open Studios, showcasing her home studio where she also teaches classes.

If you’ve ever wanted to try watercolour or strengthen your existing skills, this workshop offers a friendly, encouraging environment to learn, experiment and enjoy.

Materials List

• 1. Watercolour Paper Good quality watercolour paper is essential. Helen recommends Arches watercolour pads or sheets (Cold Pressed, 300 gsm). You may also purchase paper from Helen on the day.

  2. Watercolour Paints Bring any paints you already have. If purchasing new paints, Helen suggests selecting reds, blues and yellows in both light and dark tones. Suggested colours include: Paynes Grey, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Australian Turquoise, Rose Madder, Alizarin Crimson, Cad Orange, Cad Red, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Lemon Yellow, Indian Yellow, Sap Green, Australian Leaf Green Dark.

  3. Brushes Watercolour brushes (not bristle). Round sizes: 6, 8, 12 Flat size: 6 Optional: Squirrel Mix Oval (Helen’s favourite — long‑lasting but expensive)

  4. Pencil & Eraser Black lead pencil and kneadable eraser.

  5. Reference Photos Bring an iPad, tablet or phone with favourite photos to paint (birds, animals, landscapes, still life, flowers, fruit, teacups, etc.).

  6. Masking Tape Blue or green.

  7. Support Board A board larger than your intended paper size.

  8. Desk Easel (optional)
